On June 23, Ekrem İmamoğlu is re-elected with a big margin of victory, after rerun polls and got his certificate on June 27 for the second time this year from Ali Yerlikaya, the governor of the Istanbul province who has served as acting mayor, between two polls.
After nationwide local polls on March 31, Ekrem İmamoğlu got his first certificate of election. But due to some irregularities and illegalities, Turkey's election authority cancelled the results.
Then in a June 23 do-over poll, İmamoğlu, of the Republican People's Party (CHP), won 54.21% of the votes. After the counting of the votes, Justice and Development Party (AKP) candidate Binali Yildirim conceded the result of the race. Turkey's election authority certified the results of the new race on June 26.
The certificate puts İmamoğlu in the top post of the city of Istanbul which is one the biggest metropol of the world with its population of over 16 million people, and as well as Turkey's financial capital.
“Istanbul is the largest city both in Turkey and Europe" İmamoğlu said and thanked all "the democracy soldiers who helped the will of the [Turkish] people be revealed.
