New Train on Turkey's Eastern Express Boosts Tourism

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Turkey declared a new train will start to service for the sole purpose of reaching to eastern Turkey, since Eastern Express train became so popular visitors are having hard time finding tickets.

The Eastern Express became very popular through social media posted by users. The scenery of the place boosted the demand of the tickets. The destination starts from Ankara bound for Kars being the final frontier of eastern border.

Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy noted that they will put into service a new train for touristic purposes. He also added that the train will be the starting point of Eastern Turkey’s tourism potential.

He noted that talks are held with the Minister of Transport Mr. Cahit Turhan to prepare an alternative train service on the same route, so more people will be able to travel to the east and enjoy the beauties of the region. Ersoy also added that the train will make the region an international destination for tourism.

According to official data from State Railways, the Eastern Express carried 14,165 passengers from Ankara to Kars in the first few months of the winter last year. The seats are booked as soon as tickets go on sale and the extra wagons that are added to the express fail to cover demand. The express was on the verge of closure due to lack of interest but now has helped boost tourism in Kars.

Things changed when a group of young Turkish tourists decided to do away with speed and booked sleeping car reservations on the train. Naturally, they shared the experience on social media and from that point on the train became a popular venue for fun, adventure, socializing and new experiences.
