Transfer from Atatürk to Istanbul Airport Starts on April 5, 2019

On April 5, 2019, transferring of all operations will initiate from Atatürk Airport in Yeşilköy to the recently built 3rd airport, named “The International Istanbul Airport”.

It was declared that the new airport would become totally operational on Dec. 31st, 2018. The date to maneuver the operations, however, was delayed to March 3rd, 2019.

The transfer will start at 3:00 a.m. standard time on April 5 and will last 45 hours untill 12 a.m. on April 7th,2019.

During the transfer time, Istanbul and Atatürk Airports will solely be accessible for base carriers’ flights and each airport will start operating with a typical reduced capability with 35 arrivals and 35 departures per hour.

After the transfer, Atatürk Airport will be shut down to scheduled, unexpected domestic and international commercial flights. Atatürk Airport will solely be accessible for cargo, maintenance, general aviation, air taxi, business flights, state aircraft and other flights granted by the airports authority DHMI.

Majestic Istanbul Airport’s initial section was opened on October 29th , 2018.  The airport has the potential to welcome 90 million passengers annually.  The quantity of the passenger traffic will rise to around 200 million following the completion of the second section of the construction, in 2023. Istanbul Airport will host flights reaching to 350 destinations worldwide including locations in Africa. 

The airport has 2.5 million tons of annual cargo transportation capacity and can reach 50.5 million tons once all phases are completed.
